Tepid Sense of an Intrepid Destiny

I 'used' to read to NY Post most days on my way home from work. I enjoyed the Sports Section and was used to the layout. The Post was given out free on the way to work everyday when I was living in Central Jersey. There were always copies available when I walked on the bus. I got used to Larry Brooks on the Rangers and Peter Vescey on basketball and all that's magnanimous.

When I began reading the Post, it was December of 2001 and people were open to reading conservative views on homeland security, anthrax, Bin Laden, Tyco and corporate malfeasance. After all, we were only 3 months removed from September 11th.

People were becoming aware that Ashcroft was using the general 'fear' of the nation to pass legislation ignoring civil rights and common sense. The 'fear' allowed Congress and the House to pass similar bills, authorizing formerly illegal tactics to protect the homeland, get the evil-doers, and rid the U.S. of terrorists. Perhaps some of these laws worked, perhaps some of them only opened the door to Neo-McCarthyism and the omnipresence and omniscience of Uncle Sam, we may never realize the full implications of these laws (or find out about them). At the time, some were willing to cede some personal freedom for national security. The majority of Americans didn't grasp the idea of giving an inch and taking a mile.

It took me a while to face certain facts: In the fall, a friend of mine screamed and called me names when he saw the Post in my house (the one with Jacko on the cover). He called me all sorts of names. I told him how I read the Sports section (although sometimes I read Page Six and the Police Blotter). He was still very upset and looked at me like "that."

Today, all the headlines tout Condoleeza Rice's brilliant performance in front of the 9/11 Commission and how President Bush knew she could do it and is very proud.
PREZ SWIFT TO PHONE HIS PRAISE , RICE THRIVES IN THE COOKER , SHE'S CAN-DO CONDI , AS 'GREAT' AS W. KNEW SHE'D BE

This drew the line for me. Not that I didn't know how conservative the Post was, I didn't care that much. But this is war, after all...

Implying victory in a situation where the National Security Advisor has to be taken, against the will of the administration, to account for the massive intelligence and action errors made by the whole executive branch. She had to beg for her life, admit idiocy, yet proclaim victory? For shame!

There are so many crooked things that this administration has done that no one in the media pays attention to. It makes me sick and I wish I had the attention span and memory to name them all.

I came across an interview with Helen Thomas that was quite enlightening. She seemed very upset towards her fellow journalists about how they have caved in and been cowed by the administration's scare tactics. She said that the people that most owe all americans an apology are the journalists covering the White House... and I agree. I was searching for this interview but couldn't find it. All that I found was equally as interesting and true; just like this .

It's is amazing that in the biggest city in the United States you cannot find a paper or television station covering news impartially. The New York Times comes close, but more often than not finds itself mired in ambiguity and feigned integrity. At least the Post doesn't call themselves fair and balanced!

Speaking of which... finally, Air America has hit the airwaves and is the only outlet anywhere expressing somewhat liberal views. Despite the fact that all media personalities accuse the whole media of being terribly liberal, it is undeniably not liberal. But know, at least there is some other views besides Hannity, O'Reilly and the other goons.

The things that worry me the most are as follows:

Bush WILL find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, conveniently in the fall;
immediately following will be the capture and public lynching of Osama Bin Laden.
